Summary:A procedure for making long-term predictions of the seakeeping performance of destroyer-type ships in the North Atlantic is presented. The method is applied to two hypothetical designs when operating at one speed on two types of mission. The procedure requires first the determination of response amplitude operators in regular, long-crested waves from a series of directions. Next the spectral responses of each vessel to hindcast directional sea spectra--which have been determined at closely spaced time intervals for a number of locations in the North Atlantic for the year 1959--are determined by computer. Cumulative responses are then calculated and plotted. Long-term probabilities of not exceeding an assumed numerical index of performance are finally determined. A computer program in Fortran IV is included for finding R.M.S. response to the taped, hindcast sea spectra, and for determining statistical quantities therefrom. (Author)
