THE PROBLEM OF HISTORICAL HYDROLOGY OF SEAS AND OCEANS

The general pattern of Kara Sea sediments is analysed by comparing bottom cores obtained in various sectors of the sea. This pattern and the chemical characteristics of the sediments are discussed in connection with the influx of Atlantic Water from the west and fluvial water from the south. The str...

This pattern and the chemical characteristics of the sediments are discussed in connection with the influx of Atlantic Water from the west and fluvial water from the south. The stratification of the sediments is compared with those in the surrounding areas--the Barents, and Greenland Seas. Thus certain generalized conclusions are drawn with regard to geological and hydrological changes that have occurred in the past, which call for a new approach in the study of sedimentation in seas--namely, the application of hydrochemical and magnetic methods in order to obtain a clearer concept of the complex sedimentation processes.
