During the ten year period of operations of the Soviet Antarctic Expedition it collected a vast volume of data pertaining to the nature of Antarctica and its surrounding waters. A broad complex of scientific studies is being carried out (various subdivisions of geophysics, cartography, physical geography, aero meteorology, oceanography, glaciology, geology, biology and medicine). In addition to stationary observations performed in different years at 10 basic and a number of mobile stations, observations were carried out during trips in Eastern Antarctica and on the Southern Ocean. As a result of this work enormous areas of ocean and land, previously nothing but blank spaces on the map, were subjected to a broad scientific scrutiny. Now the nature of the region is generally fairly well known. A number of monographs have been compiled, to cover the various elements. An Atlas of Antarctica has been created - a voluminous complex composition which characterizes Antarctica as a whole, as well as some of its specific areas.
