Description
Summary:The VII Regular All-Union Conference on the Constant Geomagnetic Field and Paleomagnetism took place in Leningrad on November 18-27, 1966. About 400 participants were registered, among them representatives of the Academies of Sciences of the Socialists States. A total of 110 reports were made on recent achievements in three scientific fields of terrestrial magnetism: on the magnetic field of the earth, on paleomagnetism and on rock magnetism. Attempts were made to link the data of experimental studies on the constant geomagnetic field with theoretical concepts; certain works were dedicated to studies of the earth's magnetic field in outer space and to studies of the lunar magnetic field; magnetic measurements taken in the Norwegian Sea by a non-magnetic schooner commanded much attention; magnetic mapping and instrumental problems were the concern of several reports; all data presented on paleomagnetism were confirmed by laboratory experiments. Problems connected with the studies of rock magnetism occupied a considerable part of the conference program. Methods of separating initial magnetization and determining its nature and connections with the mineralological rock composition and physical-chemical conditions should be improved. This is the basic problem which the conference drew to the attention of the scientists. The next conference will take place in Kiev in 1970.
