Description
Summary:The spawning of mackerels occurs usually in the spring-summer period. The Pacific species of the genus Pneumatophorus reproduces in the summer, while the Atlantic species of Scomber spawn mainly in the spring, but in the North Sea the spawning occurs from mid-May to the beginning of August. Along the Primor'ye coast P. japonicus spawns from June to September. The size of the eggs of the mackerel fluctuates from 0.86 to 1.38 mm. P. japonicus and S. scombrus that spawns in the North Sea have larger eggs, 0.89 to 1.32 mm. and 0.9 to 1.38 mm., respectively. S. scombrus that spawns in the Mediterranean Sea has the smallest eggs, namely, 0.86 to 1.04 mm. Generally the size of the fat gland corresponds to the size of egg. The length of newly-developed larvae of P. japonicus and P. diego is about 3 mm., that of S. scombrus about 3.5 to 3.9 mm. Differences are also noticeable in the development of rays in the fins of these species of mackerels.
