COLD REGIONS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. PART 3. SECTION A3C. BLOWING SNOW

The monograph reviews available information on blowing snow and the formation of snowdrifts. The mechanics of wind transport is discussed, with special emphasis on turbulent diffusion of snow particles in the surface boundary layer. The metering of blowing snow is explained, and field data are given...

The mechanics of wind transport is discussed, with special emphasis on turbulent diffusion of snow particles in the surface boundary layer. The metering of blowing snow is explained, and field data are given for concentration and flux of snow particles as functions of wing speed and height above the surface. Deposition and erosion of snow is discussed and tunnel modeling is considered. The construction and deployment of snow fences is described, and snow fence performance is analysed. Snow drifting on highways and around structures is considered. Some electrical and optical phenomena are reviewed.
