Direct measurements with Swallow floats and anchored current meters were made at a point near 53N, 36W where overflow water from the Norwegian Sea passes through a gap in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from the eastern basin of the North Atlantic into the Labrador Basin. Dynamic computations accompanying the direct measurements gave a westward volume transport of overflow water in the amount of 4.6 million cubic m/sec. The volume transport of the same overflow water is computed elsewhere in the North Atlantic using the motionless surface suggested by the potential temperature/salinity relationship and the average current measurement and is found to be irregular, varying between 2.0 and 7.6 million cubic m/sec.
