This basic research program includes research into oceanographic, submarine geological and geophysical influences on the performance of naval underwater devices, emphasizing those employing underwater sound. Emphasis was placed on the distribution and physical properties of sediment of the deep sea, the structure and motion of the nearly isothermal layer of water near the surface of the sea, the measurement and collation of the velocity of sound as a function of depth and geographic position in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and the institution of a program of gravity and magnetic measurements together with the use at sea of medium-sized digital computers for recording, collating, and making routine reductions of oceanographic and geophysical observations.
