THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRING BOGS IN CENTRAL CANADA IN RELATION TO CLIMATE.

The distribution of string bogs in Central Canada was mapped and compared with specific climatic parameters in the region to estimate their potential usefulness as climatic indicators. The string bog distribution was determined along a series of flight lines made during June and October, 1963. As a...

The string bog distribution was determined along a series of flight lines made during June and October, 1963. As a result of this and other studies the climatic dependence of string bog formation and development seems established. They are a true frostsoil form occurring with or without perma-frost. They are formed in a region where the precipitation exceeds evaporation and the freeze-thaw depths exceed 125 cm (calculated value). Within the string bog distribution the region of maximum development of string bogs coinciding with the maximum freeze-thaw depths.
