The Bering Sea is much deeper than the shallow seas along the continental shelf. This is the deepest sea in the Far East; its maximum depth is 751 m greater than the corresponding depth of the Sea of Japan (3669 m) and 1046 m greater than that of the Sea of Okhotsk (3370m). In the region north of Kamchatskiy Proliv, the bottom rises in the form of a sill, whose depth does not exceed 3589 m. The main feature of the Bering Sea is its division into two distinct parts: a vast shallow water area with depths less than 200 m and a deep basin with depths greater than 3000 m.
