The oceanographic survey phase of the 1963 Bering Sea Patrol was conducted in the Chukchi, East Siberian and Laptev Seas during the months of August and September. The cruise was designed to study the effect of the discharge of the major river systems along the North Siberian coast. Accomplishments of the cruise included acquisition of comprehensive physical and chemical data as well as execution of geological, bathymetric and biological investigations. A total of 180 serial oceanographic stations were occupied; 41 in the Chukchi Sea, 53 in the East Siberian Sea and 86 in the Laptev Sea. Bathythermograph observations were taken at each of the stations and at appropriate intervals between stations. Bottom samples (gravity corer or orange peel) were also obtained at each of the oceanographic stations as well as at 21 other locations. Over 7,000 miles of echo-sounding track was obtained with an AN/UQN-1C (EDO) fathometer. Much of the 7,000 mile track was in areas of only sketchy hydrographic information. (Author)
