Its principal purpose is to study construction materials including ice and snow for polar regions, but within limits it is suitable for performance tests on small items of equipment and components for large equipment. The laboratory includes three interconnected environmental chambers ranging in size from 8 by 27 feet to 12 by 32 feet. Test temperatures from 50 to -55 F can be maintained at an atmospheric pressure for extended periods with a minumum of maintenance. Special devices have been procurred and developed for investigating iciice and snow construction, camp drift and liquid distribution in polar camps. Others will be added as the need arises.
