Description
Summary:Tests were conducted to determine the effects of environment upon the storage and functioning of the grenade, hand, riot, CS, ABC-M7A2, in climates represented by the arctic, desert, temperate, and tropic test sites. The grenade is a 28-gauge steel cylinder 2.5 inches in diameter and 4.5 inches long. It is ignited by a standard M201A1 fuze threaded into the grenade top. It is filled with approximately 275 grams of CS agent - pyrotechnic mix in the form of a pressed solid with a slightly tapered hole through the center. The top of the filling and the hole through it are coated with a starter mixture. The agent aerosol cloud is emitted through a 1/2-inch hole in the center of the bottom of the grenade and through three 3/16-inch holes in the top of the grenade. The agent dissemination holes are covered with pressure-sensitive tape to protect the filling from moisture. These tapes are blown off when the grenade is ignited. The grenade will, in general, function satisfactorily after storage for periods ranging from 23 to 29 months at the arctic, desert, temperate, and tropic test sites. The tendency of violent reaction after periods of approximately 12 months, depending upon the site, is considered unsatisfactory. This tendency, however, is not of such a nature as to render the grenade wholly unsatisfactory.
