RESEARCH CONCERNING FORECASTING ANOMALOUS PROPAGATION AT HIGH LATITUDES

Research concerning variations in the Arctic ionosphere and polar radio-propagation conditions has been carried out for the past several years. The objective has been to obtain information useful for forecasting anomalous propagation conditions and improving radio communications in the high-frequenc...

The objective has been to obtain information useful for forecasting anomalous propagation conditions and improving radio communications in the high-frequency band at high latitudes. Results of the research are given in the form of abstracts to all scientific reports and papers issued during the course of the work. Eighteen scientific reports and twenty-one related journal articles have been published; and in addition, seventeen symposium papers have been presented. Appendix V-A contains an extensive bibliography concerning PCA, auroral zone absorption, and related geophysical phenomena. A brief discussion of the detection techniques, characteristics, and causes of anomalous high latitude absorption is given. A list of polar cap absorption (PCA) events occurring during the first six months of IGY is given along with the appropriate synoptic fmin charts in appendix V-B.
