AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AND SALINITY AT A DEPTH OF 200 METERS IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC

The accuracy of some of the charts in the Meteor Atlas (Wust and Defant, 1936) which deal with the North Atlantic was investigated. New charts and prepared which show the average temperature and average salinity at a depth of 200 m in that area. Attention was focused on the areas of changing tempera...

New charts and prepared which show the average temperature and average salinity at a depth of 200 m in that area. Attention was focused on the areas of changing temperature where the major ocean currents exist. Problems in the averaging process are discussed, and the range of observed temperature is charted. The standard deviation from the mean temperature was calculated for 2 areas of the Gulf Stream region. Temperature anomalies from the mean for each degree of latitude ate plotted and compared with data published by Wust in 1937. As a result of the investigation, the Meteor Atlas was found accurate.
