Aquaculture: Microbiology/Pathology

The Microbiology/Pathology lab continues to provide free disease diagnostic services for California aquaculturists. In addition it provides assistance in all disease related problems for other research groups at BML. Disease organisms are isolated, identified, and corrective measures are recommended...

In addition it provides assistance in all disease related problems for other research groups at BML. Disease organisms are isolated, identified, and corrective measures are recommended. A survey was completed of reported bacterial pathogens of marine fish and shellfish. A diagnostic flow chart was developed to help the aquaculturist acquire economical, on-site procedures for isolating and identifying bacterial pathogens. This facilitates a more rapid application of appropriate treatments. This study was presented in a poster session at the World Mariculture Society meeting. Histological studies on what appears to be a toxic alga found on catfish gills is nearing completion. An unreported parasitic crustacean was isolated from the gills of the lobster, Homarus gammarus, and is in the process of being identified and published as a note. Ms. Rosemark has continued to participate as a lecturer in BML classes and as a guest speaker at aquaculture meetings. Dataset Homarus gammarus Dryad Digital Repository (Duke University)
