Summary: | A relationship between the friction velocity <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><semantics><msub><mi>u</mi><mo>⋆</mo></msub></semantics></math> and mean wind speed U in a stable atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over Arctic sea ice was considered. To that aim, the observations collected during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment were used. The observations showed the so-called “hockey-stick” shape of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><semantics><mrow><msub><mi>u</mi><mo>⋆</mo></msub><mo>−</mo><mi>U</mi></mrow></semantics></math> relationship, which consists of a slow increase of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><semantics><msub><mi>u</mi><mo>⋆</mo></msub></semantics></math> with increasing wind speed for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><semantics><mrow><mi>U</mi><mo><</mo><msub><mi>U</mi><mrow><mi>t</mi><mi>r</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></semantics></math> and a more rapid almost linear increase of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><semantics><msub><mi>u</mi><mo>⋆</mo></msub></semantics></math> for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><semantics><mrow><mi>U</mi><mo>></mo><msub><mi>U</mi><mrow><mi>t</mi><mi>r</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></semantics></math> , where <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" ... |
