A prospective, descriptive and analytical study of 53 cases of pregnant and non-pregnant patients who were HIV positive over the period 1994-2002 was undertaken in the Obstetrics division of the University Hospital of Maracaibo (The Dr. Armando Castillo Plaza Maternity Hospital) in Maracaibo, Venezuela. All 53 patients studied were diagnosed as HIV positive. The principal age group was between 21-25 years old (28.30%), 35% were pregnant, 37.96% had had relations with three or more males. Their obstetric antecedents (41.50%) were II-III pregnancies and 90.56% had had anti-retroviral treatment. The most frequent finding in the cultivations of vaginal secretion was vaginal flora 26.41%, Candida albicans 20.75% and association between Candida albicans and Gardnerella vaginalis in 16.98%. Gynecological follow-up in HIV positive patients should be carried out in a continuous manner. Due to their immunosuppression condition they are susceptible to present vaginal infections and relapses of the same. The study and careful treatment of vaginal secretions in women with infection for HIV is recommended.
