The appearance of multiple antimicrobial resistance has produced therapeutic controversy. The application of control measures for appropriate use of antibiotics is necessary, especially for extended spectrum cephalosporins and vancomycin in order to decrease the emergence of multiresistant Enterococcus spp. RESUMEN: La importancia de Enterococcus spp. se ha ido incrementando gradualmente, actualmente es considerado como uno de los principales patógenos nosocomiales, siendo responsable del 12% de todas las infecciones adquiridas en el hospital y del 5-10% de las bacteriemias. La aparición de resistencia a múltiples antimicrobianos ha ocasionado un dilema terapéutico siendo necesaria la aplicación de medidas de control para el uso apropiado de antibióticos, principalmente cefalosporinas de amplio espectro y vancomicina con el fin de disminuir la emergencia de Enterococcus spp. multirresistentes.
