The Arctic’s coastal States (the Arctic Five) are better positioned to take control of the region and its resources, and, besides, Arctic Five are reluctant to whatever type of outside interference. Nevertheless, States with growing international weight —like is the case of China— clamour for having a place in the future Arctic governance and in the distribution of the melting’s earnings. For that reason, Russia, one of the Arctic Five, was against the China’s access to Arctic, and there was certain degree of conflict among it. However, the Russia’s and China’s interest began to coincide since 2014, which substantially improved its relationship. Russia turned to China in search of the investment and the technology that had been denied by the West. In addition, the Asian giant is a potential market for its greater and greater natural resource reserve. For its part, the search of an alternative route for trade and energetic supply is more and more pressing in China. Beijing saw in Moscow an important vector to seep into Arctic. With all that, the high point of its connivance in the Arctic region was reached in 2018, when China’s Polar Silk Route —that will go by Russia´s maritime route of the Northeast— was released.
