La neutralidad de Suecia y Finlandia, semejanzas, diferencias y futuro

The new security situation created along Russia's borders, after the events in Ukraine in spring 2014, has profoundly affected the perception of security throughout the BalticNordic region and thus opening the debate on whether the two non-aligned Nordic nations should join the Atlantic Alliance. However, the reasons that led to the policy of neutrality, and later on of non-alignment, of both are based on different grounds, as of their today security environments differ too. Both nations evolved from a strict neutrality to a relative non-alignment in the context of post-Cold War situation, something which was mainly driven by their EU membership and partnership with NATO. Now, with an assertive Russia, the eventual accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Alliance represents an opportunity to strengthen their defence, with important budget savings to the cost of rebuilding their nowadays weak independent defence capabilities, although at an undeniable geopolitical cost. El deterioro de la situación estratégica a lo largo de la periferia oeste de Rusia, a partir de los sucesos de Ucrania en la primavera de 2014, ha afectado profundamente a la percepción de seguridad en toda la región báltico-nórdica, impulsando el debate sobre si Suecia y Finlandia, las dos naciones nórdicas no alineadas militarmente, deberían ingresar en la Alianza Atlántica. Sin embargo, las razones que dieron lugar a la política de neutralidad y posteriormente a la de no alineación, de cada una de ellas han sido diferentes, como también lo son ahora sus respectivas situaciones de seguridad. Ambas naciones evolucionaron en el contexto de la Posguerra Fría desde una neutralidad estricta hasta una relativa no alineación, impulsadas por su pertenencia a la Unión Europea (UE) y sus relaciones con la OTAN.
