They sailed from England in 1845 aboard two ships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror. The mission was to cross the last non-navigated section of the so-called Northwest Passage in the Arctic. After various vicissitudes and losses of men, the two ships were trapped in the ice in the Victoria Strait, near King William Island in the Canadian Arctic. The entire expedition, 129 men including Franklin, was lost. Infections, lead poisoning, malnutrition, scurvy, hypothermia and cannibalism ended the expedition. La expedición perdida de Franklin fue un viaje británico de exploración ártica dirigida por el capitán Sir John Franklin. Zarparon de Inglaterra en 1845 a bordo de dos barcos, el HMS Erebus y el HMS Terror. La misión era atravesar la última sección no navegada del llamado Paso del Noroeste en el Ártico. Tras distintas vicisitudes y pérdidas de hombres, las dos naves quedaron atrapadas en el hielo en el Estrecho Victoria, cerca de la isla del Rey Guillermo en el Ártico canadiense. Toda la expedición, 129 hombres incluyendo a Franklin, se perdió. Infecciones, envenenamiento por plomo, desnutrición, escorbuto, hipotermia y canibalismo acabaron con la expedición.
