description Many of the ships that brought scientific expeditions to the Antarctic in preparation for the IGY from 1955 on passed through Montevideo, giving rise to great expectations regarding this event. Uruguay, which had planned to participate in four areas of the programme: gravimetry, meteorology, solar patrols and oceanography, did not manage to obtain the necessary parliamentary approval in time so as to take part.
