A Study of the Passage Rites of the North American Indians

The beginning of human existence in the North American continent is based on the argument that the ancestors of today's Indians came to the region by crossing the Bering Strait in three migration waves. According to the results of geological surveys, glaciers descended to sea level during the Ice Age and formed a land bridge across the Bering Strait. Besides the latest estimates, in Wisconsin or during the last glacial period, have shown that sea level had dropped to almost one hundred and forty meters and this situation could form an open field thousands of kilometers wide. Today, anthropologists have divided North American Indians into ten cultural regions. The beliefs of the Indians of North America are too diverse to be explained by a single religious system. Common concepts are used to understand this culture, which has almost as many beliefs as the number of tribes. In this context, it has been determined that animism, totemism, and shamanism are common belief grounds. This article focuses on the periods we observe in nearly every society that led to significant changes in people's religious beliefs. Therefore, this study discusses the ancient beliefs and practices of some Native American tribes regarding rites that deeply affect societies such as birth, marriage and death. Kuzey Amerika kıtasında insan varlığının başlangıcı, günümüz Kızılderililerin atalarının, üç göç dalgası şeklinde, Bering Boğazı’nı geçmek suretiyle bölgeye geldikleri savına dayanmaktadır. Jeolojik araştırmaların sonuçlarına göre, buzullar, Buzul Çağı’nda, deniz seviyesine inerek Bering Boğazı boyunca karadan bir köprü oluşturmuştu. Son tahminlere göre Wisconsin veya son buzul döneminde, deniz seviyesi neredeyse yüz kırk metreye düşmüştü ve bu düşüş binlerce kilometre genişliğinde açık bir arazi oluşturabilecek durumdaydı. Günümüzde antropologlar, Kuzey Amerika yerlilerini on kültür bölgesine ayırmışlardır. Kuzey Amerika Yerlilerinin inançları tek bir dini sistemle açıklanması mümkün olmayan çeşitliliktedir. Neredeyse kabile sayısı kadar çeşitli inançların hâkim olduğu bu kültürü anlamak için ortak kavramlardan faydalanılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda animizm, totemizm ve Şamanizm’in ortak inanç zeminini oluşturduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu makalede, hemen her toplumda karşılaştığımız ve insanların inanç dünyalarında önemli değişikliklere yol açan dönemler üzerinde durulmaktadır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, bazı Kızılderili kabilelerin doğum, evlilik ve ölüm gibi toplumları derinden etkileyen geçiş törenleri ile ilgili kadim inançlarını ve uygulamalarını konu edinmektedir.
