Renewable energy potential within the scope of existing research stations in Antarctica and a preliminary study on the Turkish Research Base
Antarctica is a continent that does not have a native population due to its climate characteristics and topographic conditions. Today, the current population on the continent consists of officials and researchers living in research stations established for scientific activities. More than 30 countri...

Today, the current population on the continent consists of officials and researchers living in research stations established for scientific activities. More than 30 countries have conducted scientific studies with over 100 research stations in Antarctica. For the relevant stations to continue their activities, their energy needs must be met uninterruptedly. Even though the usage of renewable energy sources has recently increased in the relevant stations, most stations continue to produce their energy with fossil fuels. Countries carrying out their activities on this continent must protect Antarctica's ecosystem and natural and living resources. Fossil fuels release polluting gases into the environment and increase carbon emissions. In this context, it is necessary to examine the existing renewable energy potentials in the continent, and renewable energy facilities should be increased. First, this study is aimed to analyze the current renewable energy potential of 20 selected research stations in Antarctica. In the second stage of the study, a potential situation analysis was made regarding the use of renewable energy on Horseshoe Island, where the Turkish Research Station is planned to be established. Spatial analyses were conducted by comparing the MERRA-2 reanalysis data developed by NASA's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) with the data from the two existing research stations near Horseshoe Island. Thus, a preliminary study has been made on the renewable energy resources that the Antarctic Turkish Research Base can use.
