Analysis of Ali Sami Boyar's Works about Hagia Sophia

The subject of this study is the nine works of Ali Sami Boyar about Hagia Sophia. Boyar contributed to the Ottoman-Republican modernization process with his artistic understanding and works produced in line with different identities such as educator, art writer/reviewer, naval officer, painter and museum curator. Ali Sami Boyar has works in various private collections in Turkey and abroad, as well as in museums such as the Military Museum, MSGSU Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, Naval Museum, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Library and Museums Directorate. The artist has produced works with many techniques such as oil paint and watercolor. With his museology identity, Boyar worked as a director in museums such as the Naval Museum, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum and the Hagia Sophia Museum. While he was the director of the Hagia Sophia Museum, he published a book called "Hagia Sophia and Its History" and in this book, he also included the works he depicted and explained Hagia Sophia and its history. In this article, based on the source published by the artist, his works on Hagia Sophia are examined. Bu çalışmanın konusunu Ali Sami Boyar’ın Ayasofya’yı konu alan dokuz eseri oluşturmaktadır. Boyar, ressam, müzeci, eğitimci, sanat yazarı/eleştirmeni ve bahriye subayı gibi farklı kimlikler doğrultusunda ortaya koyduğu sanat anlayışı ve ürettiği eserlerle Osmanlı-Cumhuriyet modernleşmesi sürecine katkıda bulunmuştur. Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi ve Paris Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’nde resim eğitimi almış, İnas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi’nde müdürlük yapmıştır. Boyar'ın Askeri Müze, MSGSÜ İstanbul Resim ve Heykel Müzesi, Deniz Müzesi, İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Kütüphane ve Müzeler Müdürlüğü gibi müzelerin yanı sıra yurt içinde ve yurt dışında çeşitli özel koleksiyonlarda eserleri bulunmaktadır.
