The fold out map shows clouds around the outer edges of the map depicting the known world from the division of the Mogul Empire, A.D. 1294, to the discovery of America, A.D. 1498. Sixteenth period. Africa is fully shown for the first time and the East Coast of America from Newfoundland to the northern edge of South America. The West Indies are shown in blue. 1st edition. The unique maps show progressively receding cloud borders to indicate the expansion of geographical knowledge over time. This atlas may have influenced Emma Willard's "Atlas to Accompany a System of Universal History" - 1835. Willard's Atlas uses the "cloud" maps in a very similar way. See our copy of Willard.
