The country needs oil as much as coal. Steam engines are fueled with oil, and gasoline for cars and tractors is obtained from oil. Before the five-year plan, 12 million tons of oil were produced per year. Right Side (Chemistry) Title: Химия 1927-28 г. (Chemistry 1927-28) Text: Little bread is grown if the land is poorly fertilized. And pests—gophers, ground squirrels, mice—can destroy crops. Chemistry is for the harvest! Chemistry is against pests! Before the five-year plan, the chemical industry poorly supported agriculture. Only 175 thousand tons of chemical fertilizers were produced per year.
