Huge map of the Far East, including territories of the Eastern USSR, Northeastern China and Japan. It was compiled in the late Stalinist period, after World War II was over and countries changed possessions in this region. In particular, Manchukuo was liquidated and Sakhalin was fully annexed by the Soviet Union. The Far East became a crucial region for Soviet economics, due to wealthy gold deposits in Eastern Siberia and opportunities of Pacific fisheries. Planned resettlement to the Far East began in the 1920s. In 1949-1953, more than 1.5 million people were deported to the Far East. A significant contribution to the construction of local transport routes was made by GULAG prisoners. This map was printed for high education institutions. It features depth and height of relief, defining them by specified colors. It indicates rivers, waterfalls, salt lakes, swamps, railways, roads and ice highways. The latter are still essential in terms of permafrost climate." (Bookvica, 2023) Map Ice permafrost Sakhalin Siberia David Rumsey Historical Map Collection (Cartography Associates) Pacific |
