"Color lithographic map showing international trade through ports and cities of the Western part of the Russian Empire, from Northern ports in Arkhangelsk and Saint Petersburg to Southern settlements: Tiflis, Baku, Odessa, Taganrog. The main map is supplemented with two small-scale maps: Institutions of the Arkhangelsk Customs District and Institutions of the Quarantine and Custom Department of the Caucasian Viceroyalty. Also, a large diagram displays the export of timber, grain, etc. through customs divided into groups, depending on the sea to which they linked. Each foreign trade city is marked with a pie chart of the ratio of export and import of goods on a scale proportional to the volume of trade. According to the map, Sevastopol was primarily an import port while Riga and Mariupol customs processed more exports than imports. Essential transport routes are also defined. Under the legend, the compiler gives total turnover for customs oriented to Prussia, Austria, Moldavia and Asia in general. The compiler, Mikhail Musnitskii (1838-1894) was a Russian cartographer and statistician. He worked in the Central Statistical Committee and the Ministry of Railways. Investigating reasons for the fall in prices for agricultural products, he conducted an important study on grain tariffs and published it in the work “Ordering Tariffs for the Transportation of Grain Cargoes” (1889)."
