Published in the year of Cook's return to England from his second voyage, this is the first issue of the complete edition of the survey of Newfoundland and Labrador, which he carried out in the 1760s. These incredibly detailed and accurate charts, along with his skills as a navigator, were largely responsible for Cook being given command of the Endeavour, which took him on his first circumnavigation. Samuel Holland, the first Surveyor General of British North America, [provides] insight into Cook's surveying work in North America: . whenever I could get a moment of time from my duty, I was on board the Pembroke where the great cabin, dedicated to scientific purposes and mostly taken up with a drawing table, furnished no room for idlers.
