Main Directorate of Geodesy and Cartography; et al. A second edition of Atlas Mira was published also in English as "The World Atlas" in 1967, Pub list #: 1603.000, with fewer maps of the USSR. First edition published in 1954, it provides complete picture of Earth's hydrography, physical, political and administrative division, settlements, transport and communication. The atlas is divided into 4 main parts: 1- World maps. 2- Maps of the USSR. 3- Maps of the continents. 4- Maps of the Polar regions and Oceans. On the first page of the atlas is a vignette with a world map inside a five-pointed star, depicting the Soviet Union. On reverse of title Page “Издан по постановлению Совета Министров СССР" = Published by decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. The atlas consists of pages of editorial board, preface, table of contents and key to map symbols, with a duplicate sheet, and 283 maps in attractive full color with tints for elevation and sea depth values, most double page with title page and key map and notes. Showing political and administrative boundaries, capitals, major cities, regions, railways, major airports, air routes, submarine communication cables, shipping and exploration routes, distances, canals, rivers, lakes and forests. Bound in the embossed coat of arms of the USSR on the cover, and the title embossed in gold on the cover and on spine. |
