"A very rare world map on Mercator's projection, drawn by Pierre Moullart-Sanson and published in 1695. This scientific map indicates, at the degrees of latitude, the hours of the days according to the sign where the sun is located, which allowed, according to Mr. d'Estoubeville, to calculate the degrees of longitude. California is depicted as an island, the outlines of Australia as those of New Zealand are partially drawn, while the south pole is named Terre australe et inconnue au magellanique (Southern and unknown or Magellanic land). Member of the famous dynasty of cartographers of the 17th century, Pierre Moullart-Sanson inherited the business from his grandfather Nicolas Sanson in 1692.
