Summary:Hand-colored, engraved map of the world on Mercator's projection. Shows political boundaries, topography, drainage, coastlines, islands and shoals. Relief shown with hachures. Features routes of exploration with names of explorers and dates of voyages. Includes latitudinal and longitudinal lines, a legend indicating missionary stations, as well as four 32-pointed compass roses, including one delineating between N, N. by E., N. N. E., N. E. by E., E. N. E. E. by N. and E, etc. Descriptive text throughout, such as: Icy ocean : Impenetrable barrier of ice from shore to shore in August 1778 & July 1779. Also, with notes on fauna and flora, such as "Blue petrels and rock weed" south of Australia, as well as descriptions of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Table at upper right corner: Population of the world. Time zones indicated with Roman numerals at the top and bottom: Hours after noon when it is noon at Greenwich. Flags of different nations surround map in the margins, and beyond the flags is an ornamental border with illustrations of shells. With four inset maps, each with vignettes of scenery, indigenous figures and native animals: Europe -- America : South North -- Asia -- Africa. Map segmented in eighteen rectangles and mounted on folded linen. Map is 62 x 96 cm, on sheet 80 x 113 cm, folded to 27 x 19 cm. Folded map housed within - but not attached to - board covers, which tie together.
