Description
Summary:Second edition. First edition was 1674, with a third edition in 1686. "A beautiful and rare map of the world drawn for the use of traders and navigators, showing the trade routes to and from the East Indies (South-East Asia) and the West Indies (West Indies), with the representation of four ships. The world is depicted as it was known in the mid-17th century, with the geographical errors of the time, such as California depicted as an island, or Jessa's land stretching to America. The representation of Antarctica is particularly astonishing, showing a mythical land called "Land of the parrots where some people place the kingdoms of Psitac, Beach, Lucac and Maletur". The names of the last three kingdoms are taken from Marco Polo, although the Venetian traveler never mentioned the southern land, and these names, distorted, undoubtedly referred to regions of Cambodia,Java and Malaysia under his pen. Born in Abbeville in 1618, Pierre Duval was a French geographer and nephew of Nicolas Sanson. He was a prolific geography author, who published many small atlases, some for educational purposes, others inspired by the military and political situation of the kingdom. Second state, with the date of 1677 in the title." (Begonia Le Bail, 2021) Shirley, 465 (state 2); Pastoureau, DUVAL II Ea, 59.
