"Fascinating wall map of the world, lithographed on linen by the venerable Berger-Levrault bookselling and publishing firm in 1834. The map focuses on the primary physical features of the globe, including oceans, rivers, mountains and lakes. The northwest passage has not yet been discovered and the only the first signs of an Antarctic continent are shown south of the Straits of Magellan. The map is part of an extremely rare set of "Grande Cartes Muettes" (large blank maps) published by the Levrault firm in Strassbourg for educational purposes and used by French Ecoles Normales Primaires (Primary Normal Schools) in the 1830s. We note that Levrault published several other lithographic maps wall maps in the 1830s, including maps of the continents, France, Oceana and the Holy Land, which were apparently first printed in about March of 1832. All examples of the map we located were printed on paper. The map is extremely rare. We note only an example on two sheets in the Bibliotheque National de France." (Ruderman, 2020)
