Description
Summary:Engraved hand colored in outline map of North America, Polar regions of Canada, Central America and part of South America. There is a depiction of the Great lake and St. Lawrence Region and the Mississippi River, California is shown as an island, the mouth of the Mississippi is pushed into Texas, the Carolinas shown on the map. Major cities and towns are shown. Includes decorative title and scale cartouches. Relief shown pictorially. First edition of Nicolas de Fer, Petit et Nouveau Atlas, was republished in 1705 and 1723. Maps engraved by C. Inselin, Jean Baptiste Lie ebaux, and H. v. Loon. Atlas consists of pictorial, engraved title page signed: N. Guerard in. et fecit, two additional maps bound in: La sphere artificielle, ou, Armilaire oblique (1716) and Paris (1694). Certaines cartes gr.s.c. par C. Inselin, d'autres par Liebaux, and 19 engraved double page sheets maps, all hand-colored in outline, dated 1692-97, accompanied by engraved descriptive text throughout. Bound in mottled calf, with original title label mounted to spine. Most maps engraved by C. Inselin, the same engraver who engraved the maps in de Fer's later Atlas Curieux, published 1700-1705. Unlike the more common Atlas Curieux with a single map of the Western Hemisphere, de Fer's Petit et Nouveau Atlas contains separate maps of North America and South America. The map of North America, dated 1693, shows California as an Island with an indented northern coast and no place names, but labeled Isle de Californie. Pastoureau, Fer XIIa; McLaughlin / Mayo 111.
