A focus on the last segment of the North West Passage shipping route, the M'Clure Strait with a comparison of SSM/I NASA-Team retrieved sea ice concentration at 25km resolution (as a surrogate for future MetOp-SG MWI data) and AMSR2 ASI retrieved sea ice concentration at 4km resolution (as a surrogate for a future CIMR product). a high resolution radiometer is less susceptible to land contamination as can be seen in this example. While the 25km sea ice concentration product retrieves low to mid SIC values in the highlighted channel, the corresponding MODIS visible image shows no sea ice is there. The finer land mask available to the 4km resolution avoids land contamination in coastal regions.
