Description
Summary:This figure comes from the CIMR Deliverable 90 (Societial Benefit Case Study 3) which evaluates CIMR Support for Sea Ice and SST in coastal regions. The first and the second figures show the coverage of the IR satellite observations from MetopB only (left) and MetopB, Sentinel 3 SLSTR, VIIRS_NPP and NOAA AVHRR 19 combined (middle) available satellite observations used to generate the CMEMS Arctic SST L4 product. Simulated CIMR observations are displayed in the right panel, constructed from the L4 observations, applying the 15 km spatial land and sea ice mask and a spatial smoothing filter. The figures show the effect of the persistent cloud cover found over newly opened ocean after sea ice melt on current IR satellite constellations in the Arctic, and the potential for improvements with the CIMR PMW SST observations.
