Description
Summary:This figure comes from the CIMR Deliverable 90 (Societial Benefit Case Study 3) which evaluates CIMR Support for Sea Ice and SST in coastal regions. The sea surface temperatures for the Baltic Sea area for February 20th 2017 from IR L3S SST product (left), RSS AMSR2 SST product (middle) and a simulated CIMR SST retrieval (right). Grey areas denote regions of missing data. Simulated CIMR SSTs were derived from subsampled fields in the CMEMS L4 SST products smoothed to obtain a resolution representative of CIMR (15 km). The figures show the effect of the persistent cloud cover that hampers IR SST retrievals during the winter months in the Baltic Sea. Whilst the PMW SSTs from AMSR2 are an improvement, but have limited coverage due to the need to exclude coastal contamination. As CIMR is a passive sensor, the cloud does not affect retrievals and improved resolution leads to greater coverage of the area.
