description Statistics Canada. Canadian Census of Population, 2016: Census Profiles: Aboriginal Peoples | Indicator: Total - Aboriginal identity for the population in private households - 25% sample data | Indicator Detail: Total - Aboriginal identity for the population in private households - 25% sample data | Measure: Counts | Gender: Total, 2016. Data Planet™ Statistical Datasets: A SAGE Publishing Resource Dataset-ID: 075-004-001 Dataset: Data on Aboriginal peoples are reported for the population in private households. The term “Aboriginal” was used in the 2016 Census questionnaire to refer to First Nations people, Métis, and Inuit living in Canada. These are the three groups defined as the Aboriginal peoples of Canada in the Constitution Act, 1982, Section 35 (2). A person may be in more than one of these three specific groups. Ancestry refers to the ethnic or cultural origins of the person's ancestors, an ancestor being usually more distant than a grandparent. A person can have more than one ethnic or cultural origin. Statistics Canada cautions that users should be aware that the estimates associated with this variable are more affected than most by the incomplete enumeration of certain Indian reserves and Indian settlements in the Census of Population. Statistics presented include counts and rates, and are provided in total and by gender, where available. The 2016 Census Profiles is a data product of the 2016 Census of Population Program. The Census is conducted every five years, collecting social, demographic, and economic information on the Canadian population for a wide range of geographies. Data users are encouraged to review the technical documentation linked below, which includes a detailed Census Dictionary and Reference Guides to individual concepts covered in the 2016 Census. A guide to Canadian geographies covered in the Census of Population, 2016, is available here: https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/ref/dict/az2-eng.cfm?topic=az2 .
