Carson Fellow Shane McCorristine investigates Victorian era understandings of the Arctic, which often posited the Arctic as enchanted or even evil. With representations and depictions of the Arctic from the nineteenth century, he shows how a new understanding of this region inspired some people to dissent from the established scientific and geographical viewpointsdeveloping ideas that he maintains are crucial to our current understanding of the Arctic. Dr. McCorristine is a cultural historian with research interests in spiritualism and psychical research in British culture, the literature of the supernatural, surrealism, and Arctic exploration during the Victorian Period.
