This is the only species of the genus Formica which plunders the nests of other species of their young brood in the pupa state, which they bring up as slaves to their own community. The species is not uncommon in Hampshire, where it attacks the nests of F. fusca and F. cunicularia; in its nests have also been observed numerous individuals of the yellow ant, F. flava; it does not raise nests similar to the wood-ant, but belongs to the division of mining ants. : Published as part of Smith, F., 1858, Catalogue of the hymenopterous insects in the collection of the British Museum.
