As there were a large number of specimens, some have been set aside for genetic processing (Araújo-Silva et al. research in progress). Given the distances between the populations, we anticipate the presence of a species complex. Remarks. This species has very characteristic chelipeds, with a massive dactylus in relation to the fixed finger, and it belongs in that group of generally robust and angular Paranarthrura species that have biarticulate uropod endopods (see below). These records extend the known distribution of P. f o r t i s p i n a further north in the Southern Ocean, away from near the Antarctic coast in the Weddell Sea (1030–1040 m) and Amundsen Sea (489–527 m) (Sieg 1986 a, Jóżwiak & Błażewicz-Paszkowycz 2011) as well as greatly increasing the lower depth limit to 3961 m. Unconfirmed records also exist for the New Zealand region, on the Chatham Rise (Bird ined.). : Published as part of Larsen, Kim, Bird, Graham & Ota, Mayumi, 2013, The ANDEEP Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) revisited I: the family Agathotanaidae Lang, with description of four new species, pp. 424-444 in Zootaxa 3630 (3) on pages 438-439, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.3630.3.2, http://zenodo.org/record/216501
