According to Opinion 1820 (ICZN 1995) the Lichtenstein's work (1796) is suppressed for nomenclatural purposes and Sphex annulata Fabricius 1798 is not the junior homonym of Sphex annulata Lichtenstein 1796 and the supposed synonymy of type species (Wahis 1986) is invalid. A new synonymy of the type species is proposed: Sphex annulata Fabricius, 1798 (= Pompilus alternatus Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau, 1845, syn. nov. = Pompilus comparatus Smith, 1855, syn. nov. = Priocnemis culpabilis Costa, 1893, syn. nov.
