Depth: surface (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California), also seen near bottom (Parin and Pakhorukov 2003) to 600 m (1,968 ft) (Fritzsche and Thiesfeld in Carpenter and Niem 1999). Also recently as Macroramphosus gracilis (Lowe, 1839).
