Disk, pseudobranchs, and pleural ribs absent. Branchiostegal rays six. Head large. Mouth large, terminal; lower jaw massive. Teeth simple, sharp, often depressible canines. Mandible to anus distance half or more of mandible to anal fin origin distance. Barbels on snout present.
