CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus [ teste Schumann (1986: 20)]. FAMILY: CALLIPHORIDAE. REMARKS: There are conflicting views on whether to treat Eggisops as a valid genus (Schumann, 1986; Rognes, 1991b) or as a subgenus within or synonym of Melanomya Rondani, 1861 (Downes, 1986; Pape, 1988b). Verrall in Scudder (1882: 123) listed the spelling Engyzops and this was cited as an emendation by Bezzi & Stein (1907: 502, “ em . Scudd. 1882”), but criteria for making this name available as an emendation were not found to be fulfilled in Scudder (1882). Engyzops Verrall, 1882 is thus an unavailable name, new status . Note that Eugyops of Bezzi & Stein (1907: 502) is a misspelling of Engyops Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889 and not Eggisops Rondani, 1862.
