X. stygiodes (Nyl. ex Cromb.) O. Blanco, A. Crespo, Elix, D. Hawksw. & Lumbsch (2004b: 971) Reported from a rather limited number of localities in Australia and New Zealand, in addition to the type locality at Kerguelen Islands and a single locality in Argentinian Tierra del Fuego (Esslinger 1977). It was reported as new to Argentina from Tierra del Fuego by Calvelo & Liberatore (2002), and generally listed from Chile in Galloway & Quilhot (1998), without references to published records. We have found the species in four different areas within the dry sectors of Magallanes. Its small size indicates that it is easily overlooked. All specimens were found to contain fumarprotocetraric acid, being the only brown to black Xanthoparmelia species from the study area producing this acid. Specimens examined: CHILE.
