description X. humicola (Fabricius, 1780) – Podura humicola Fabricius, 1780: 213 AK Fjellberg 1985; Skidmore 1995 BC Spencer 1948; Christiansen & Bellinger 1980, 1998; Setälä & Marshall 1994; Rusek & Marshall 1995; Skidmore 1995; Addison et al. 2003; Cannings & Scudder 2005; Cannings 2010 AB Christiansen & Bellinger 1980, 1998; Skidmore 1995; Lindo 2014 MB Hammer 1953; Skidmore 1995; Babenko & Fjellberg 2006; Porco et al. 2014 ON James 1933; Hammer 1938; Maynard 1951; Christiansen & Bellinger 1980, 1998; Bird & Chatarpaul 1986; Skidmore 1995 QC Skidmore 1995; Therrien et al. 1999a Remarks: This species prefers “seashore habitats with rich algal growth” (Fjellberg 1998, p. 52) in the Palaearctic but appears to inhabit both shore and inland communities in Nearctic, for instance “forest and meadow litter” of Alaska (Fjellberg 1985, p. 56). These differences in habitat preference are unusual and raise some doubts about the identity of this species.
